Fostering Courage, Compassion, Change and Community Across Klang Valley
Kuala Lumpur, Monday 21 October 2024 – HELP University held its Day of Service on 19 October 2024, uniting 300 employees from various departments and faculties, including senior leadership, academic staff, and administrative teams, to embody this year’s theme: Courage, Compassion, Change and Community. Held across multiple locations in Klang Valley, the event highlighted HELP’s commitment to both environmental sustainability and community service through impactful activities.
Participants engaged in a diverse range of service initiatives. Volunteers worked on environmental projects such as cleaning riverbanks, restoring green spaces, and sorting materials at recycling centres to promote sustainable practices. Community service efforts included painting school facilities, providing essentials and meals to refugee centres and old folks homes, leading reading activities for underprivileged children, organising craft and sandwich-making classes, and other meaningful activities, ensuring the well-being of marginalised populations.
The Day of Service was not just about the tasks completed, but also about encouraging HELP University’s staff to step out of their daily routines and comfort zones. This day provided a chance for reflection on the challenges faced by the environment and underserved communities. By engaging directly with these issues, participants gained fresh perspectives on how they can contribute more meaningfully to societal change and environmental preservation.
Vice Chancellor of HELP University, Professor Dr Liew Teik Kooi (Andy), reflected on the broader purpose of Day of Service and its alignment with the university’s mission: “Our Day of Service is not just a one-day event, it serves as a reminder that our commitment to community and environmental support should continue beyond this day and into many days to come. This day exemplifies our core values by allowing us to experience firsthand the challenges faced by both our communities and environment. Through these acts of service, we are not only addressing immediate needs but also inspiring our community to think about long-term solutions. It’s about cultivating the courage to step up, even when the problems seem overwhelming, and fostering compassion and empathy, which are vital qualities not just in education but in life. Furthermore, this day reminds us to be grateful for what we have, as serving others gives us the opportunity to reflect on the privileges we often overlook. We believe that our role goes beyond imparting knowledge, but to build character and inspire our staff and students to become agents of positive change.”
HELP University’s five core values were powerfully embodied throughout the day’s activities. The Pride of Achievement was evident as staff took part in hands-on initiatives and witnessed the immediate impact of their contributions. Sharing Success was demonstrated through the teamwork and collaboration across departments, while The Courage to Be was diplayed by volunteers stepping out of their comfort zones to address social and environmental challenges. With every action, the value of To Be Compassionate shone brightly as participants extended kindness and support to those in need. Most importantly, the event reinforced HELP’s commitment To Be Significant, as the University made meaningful, lasting contributions to both the community and the environment.
HELP Education Group’s Co-Chief Executive Officer (Tertiary), Dr Goh Chee Leong, also reflected on the day’s significance, stating “This day of service and reflection is an opportunity for us as educators to enlarge our vision of the world, to come face to face with the challenges and needs that exist in our society and planet. This experience helps us reflect on what we can do to help, and how we can educate our students to be part of the solution. For me personally, I was inspired by the NGOs that dedicate their lives to the cause. I also enjoyed working alongside my colleagues. I’m so proud of them. They truly are role models to our students.”
HELP University extends its heartfelt thanks to the following centres, NGOs, schools and associations that welcomed the team, offering them the opportunity to give back to the community; Praise Emmanuel Children’s Home, Amitabha Malaysia, MILO Malaysia, The Reading Bus Club, Care for Welfare Malaysia, Majlis Pusat Kebajikan Semalaysia, Pertubuhan Permuliharaan Nilai Estetika Kuala Lumpur, HELP School of Hospitality & Tourism, Zomi Education Centre, Rumah HOPE, SJK(T) Kuang, Selangor, Friends of Sungai Klang Taman Melawati River Three, The Tzu-Chi Foundation, and The Rotary Club of Bukit Kiara Sunrise. These partnerships with local organisations were essential in making the Day of Service a success, and the university looks forward to strengthening these relationships in future initiatives. The generosity and commitment of these groups were invaluable, allowing HELP staff to engage in meaningful service that addressed the immediate needs of the community and environment.
The success of the Day of Service was also made possible through the generous support of sponsors, including SPARK from CIO Academy Asia Singapore, which contributed SGD2,000, and QSR Brands (M) Holdings Berhad through Kentucky Fried Chicken, whose support provided essential resources for the day’s activities.
HELP University’s Day of Service reflects its deep commitment to fostering unity, empathy, and responsibility. By combining environmental stewardship with community outreach, the university continues to encourage positive change in both the local ecosystem and the broader society.
