Every year the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting at HELP University produces numerous outstanding graduates and students who obtain top scholarships from prestigious foreign universities. However, this year has proven to be more exceptional for the Faculty when seven of their business students were awarded the University of Queensland (UQ) scholarship for the February intake, a new record compared to last year’s three students.
The seven scholarship holders were Tong Boey, Yap Kung Jien, Chan Tze Hen, Mohammad Idri bin Abdul Rahim, Nasif Arefin, Lee Jong Min and Ok Juyeon. The last three were foreign students from Bangladesh and South Korea respectively. The scholarship allows them to receive up to a 100% waiver of tuition fees for their final year of studies in the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law, UQ.
“I chose HELP due to its strong affiliation with its partner universities, especially in Australia. Furthermore, the 2+1 programmes that HELP offered meant that I could experience university life in a few countries and be able to receive a world-renowned degree from an Australia university,” said Nasif Arefin, a Bangladeshi student who is currently pursuing a bachelor degree in International Business at UQ.

“I am extremely excited to transfer to UQ as it gives me the opportunity to learn about the culture of another country and broaden my network of friends and acquaintances. The scholarship is very important to me as it would greatly help me to reduce the financial burden of my family,” he added.
Another UQ scholarship recipient is Yap Kung Jien, a former student of Chong Hwa Independent High School, Kuala Lumpur who is no stranger to academic achievements. He has scored 7As in both his UEC and SPM examinations and is also a recipient of the Chong Hwa-HELP University Scholarship to pursue a Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Hon) degree at HELP University.
“I find the Accounting programme at HELP to be remarkable and valuable as it has broadened my knowledge and vision. The lecturers, especially Mr Steven Toh and Ms Liew Huey Min have been most helpful and friendly, and I would like to express my gratitude to them for their guidance,” said Yap.
Yap is currently pursuing an Accounting and Finance degree at UQ. “The scholarship granted to me will greatly reduce the financial burden of my family, allowing me to invest in myself to pursue a master degree programme in the future. I plan to become a Partner in one of Malaysia’s Big 4 accounting firms.”

The success of the seven UQ scholarship holders is a testament to the high quality and standards of the Faculty. HELP continues its long tradition of producing outstanding students and serves as a gateway to top Australian universities such as UQ, University of Melbourne, Australian National University, University of New South Wales, University of Western Australia, Macquarie University and many more.
In 2017, out of 80 business students who went to UQ, seven were awarded scholarships. HELP University is the only university in the world to have a 2+1 articulation programme with UQ, a member of the Group of 8 Universities (Go8) in Australia, a coalition of leading universities in Australia.
The Faculty also has strong connections with various industry partners and leading organisations such as General Electric, Affin-Hwang Asset Management Bhd, KPMG, PWC, EY, Deloitte and BDO Binder.
Recently, five business students won the 2017 Affin-Hwang Asset Management Bursary Award. Khoo Shun Xuan, Yeo Han Yee, Loke Mun Hon, Wong Tsok Linn and Lee Pei Ern, each received a bursary of RM10,000 and in addition a two month paid-internship at Affin-Hwang Asset Management and upon completion of the internship, the opportunity of being employed by Affin-Hwang Asset Management.
“Affin-Hwang Asset Management has been very supportive and generous towards HELP University over the last ten years and receiving this award further recognises our students’ outstanding performance not only academically but also emphasises the importance of co-curricular activities,” said Ms Liew Huey Min, the Deputy Head of Department of Business Studies of the Faculty.
The five recipients felt their hard work had been recognised with the award of the scholarships and one of them, Khoo Shun Xuan had this to say, “Receiving this scholarship is a great honour for me. It is not just the receipt of money: it is an evidence that I am recognised as having potential for the future of the society. Therefore, I will do my best to play my part so that I will be able to contribute and give back to society in the future. I am grateful to have been chosen as one of the scholarship holders as it empowers me to pursue a professional qualification in the future.”
HELP University is renowned for its business, accounting, and financial programmes. Its graduates are well received by various industries and many are head hunted by multi-national companies within six months of graduation. The Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accounting at HELP is one of the largest business schools in the country, and its Bachelor of Business (Accounting) (Honours) degree is recognised by many international professional accounting bodies.
This is a testimony to the educational quality provided by this faculty. Not all universities in this world despite their status, will have their accounting degrees received maximum exemptions or accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and Certified Practising Accountant Australia (CPA Australia).
HELP also provides various scholarships such as the School Achiever Scholarship Awards (SASA) to outstanding students who have displayed excellent leadership and academic results. Other scholarships available are Distinction, Merit, and the Principal’s List Award Scholarships. Furthermore, HELP’s programmes are fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA), and all HELP’s business diploma and degree programmes are listed in the loan list of PTPTN.
