Over the years, computers have become prevalent and have been embedded in every facet of our society. It is almost impossible to imagine a world without computers. They have also gained significance as they have improved the efficiency and productivity in the workplace and at home. Software engineers and developers are at the forefront of this field of technology.
Software engineers study and apply software engineering concepts and techniques in the development, maintenance and design of software. From developing applications for clients by analysing the end user’s needs to coordinating the growth of a business or client’s computer systems, the role of a software engineering is important throughout the software development process.
HELP University’s School of Information and Communication Technology positioned their students and graduates to drive the information technology (IT) industry to higher levels of innovation and success. The faculty are advocates of a well-rounded education in technology and innovation.
Its newest postgraduate programme, the Postgraduate Certificate in Software Engineering (PGCSE), prepares students for careers that deal with computer systems from design through implementation. The programme offers a comprehensive and professionally-oriented software engineering education that combines advanced software engineering concepts and methods with the applied and in-demand skills necessary to pursue a successful career in technology.
“The PGCSE will prepare students for a rewarding career in the software industry. This includes positions in software houses, consultancies and with major software users, such as the financial sector, where there is a significant demand for professionals with a deep knowledge of advanced software development and a rigorous software engineering practice,” said Dr Sien Ven Yu, Dean of the Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology at HELP University.
“Career opportunities exist in a wide variety of roles including software designers and developers, project managers, database managers, programmers, analysts, and consultants. After the completion of the programme, candidates may also consider a Master’s degree or a research career.”
The PGCSE also enhances students’ software engineering and programming skills to develop a systematic understanding of the principles of the architecture, analysis, design and development of software.
“This industry-focused programme is for computing graduates and experienced information and communication technology (ICT) professionals who want to be acquainted with advanced software engineering concepts and methods,” explained Dr Sien, “as well as design issues and techniques for the development of high-quality, complex software systems.”
The duration of the PGCSE is over the course of six months. Candidates who complete the PGCSE will be eligible for an accelerated Master’s programme at the International Technological University (ITU) in San Jose, USA.
The credits earned in the PGCSE will be accepted in any of the following programmes at ITU: MSc in Software Engineering, MSc in Software Engineering specialising in Computer Science, MSc in Software Engineering specialising in Information & Cybersecurity, MSc in Engineering Management, MSc in Electrical Engineering, MSc in Computer Engineering, and the MBA in Business Analytics.
The International Technological University (ITU) is a WASC-accredited, non-profit private university located in San Jose, California. The university provides students with a high-quality education, closely tied to the trends of the industry. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, ITU’s teaching and research faculty are also made up of industry leaders from companies such as HP, Cisco, Google, NASA and ARM.
Students interested to further pursue their studies and a career in software engineering will only need to spend one year at ITU. Since ITU is located close to many of the globe’s foremost technological companies in Silicon Valley, students will be able to pursue, collaborate and network with a community of the world’s centre of entrepreneurship and innovation.
This credit-transfer programme also provides opportunities for students to gain a one-year industry working experience with USA employers where students can earn money and gain work experience at the same time. After receiving the Master’s qualification, students may be eligible to apply for up to three years of post-Master’s Optional Practical Training (OPT) in the USA, under current Federal regulations.
Intakes for the PGCSE are in the months of January, April, July and September. For more information on HELP University’s PGCSE programme, contact 03-2716 2000 or visit www.help.edu.my to learn more.
