In celebration of World Tourism Day 2024, the PATA Malaysia HELP University Student Chapter (PATAMA USC), in collaboration with the School of Hospitality and Tourism, organised a compelling forum titled “Tourism and Peace” at the ELM Graduate School. This event aimed to explore the significant role that tourism plays in promoting peace and cultural understanding across the globe.
We were privileged to host Tunku Dato’ Seri (Dr.) Iskandar bin Tunku Abdullah, Group President of Melewar Group’s tourism companies, as our keynote speaker. His address was enlightening, offering invaluable insights into how tourism acts as a bridge between diverse cultures. Tunku Iskandar highlighted Malaysia’s rich cultural landscape, emphasising that our nation’s diversity exemplifies tourism’s potential to foster empathy, collaboration, and peaceful coexistence among communities.
Following the keynote address, attendees engaged in an interactive Q&A session, where they posed thoughtful questions and shared perspectives on the intersection of tourism and peace. This lively discussion underscored the importance of understanding tourism not just as an economic driver but as a catalyst for social harmony.
To deepen the conversation, a student-led workshop was conducted, which focused on how tourism can be harnessed as a powerful force for global harmony. Participants brainstormed ideas and strategies to promote peace through various tourism initiatives, encouraging a proactive approach to integrating social responsibility within the tourism sector.
A heartfelt thank you to our keynote speaker, Tunku Iskandar, and to our moderator, Ms. Rajesvare Rada, as well as all attendees who contributed to the success of this event. Together, we can harness the power of tourism to bridge divides and cultivate a more peaceful world.
