HELP University’s Department of Law recently organised an impactful two-day EduQuest event at Yu Yuan Senior High School in Sandakan, Sabah. This initiative aimed to introduce Senior 3 students to the dynamic field of legal education while showcasing HELP University as a leading institution for higher learning in Malaysia.
The program began with an introduction to HELP University and its esteemed law programs, designed to spark interest in legal studies and highlight the university’s reputation for excellence in education. A thought-provoking session on fundamental liberties under the Malaysian Federal Constitution provided students with valuable insights into their rights and the importance of these principles in daily life.
Interactive activities added a practical dimension to the learning experience. A “Rights Auction” allowed students to critically evaluate and bid on rights they deemed most significant. Following this, participants collaborated in small groups to present and justify their choices, developing teamwork and public speaking skills while deepening their understanding of legal concepts.
On the second day, the focus shifted to freedom of speech and its limitations, particularly the law of defamation. Students explored the interplay between free expression and legal boundaries, guided by HELP University lecturer, Mr. Muhamad Abral Bin Abu Bakar. The highlight of the event was a mock court session, where participants assumed roles as plaintiffs or defendants to argue simulated defamation cases. This immersive activity allowed students to apply their knowledge in a dynamic, hands-on environment, showcasing their analytical and persuasive abilities.
Feedback from students and teachers was overwhelmingly positive. Many praised the mock court as a memorable and engaging experience that brought theoretical concepts to life. The event inspired several participants to consider law as a future career path. Yu Yuan Senior High School also expressed its appreciation for the Department of Law’s efforts in organising such an enriching program.
The EduQuest Sandakan event underscores HELP University’s commitment to innovative education and community outreach. By bridging academic theory with practical application, the Department of Law continues to set a standard for impactful and meaningful learning experiences.
