Raja Nur Syazwina's Profile
Raja Nur Syazwina, an alumnus of HELP University’s University of Derby Business programme, has carved a remarkable path in the world of business through her analytical prowess and willingness to embrace change.
‘’My academic journey was not linear. Initially, I was enrolled in HELP’s American Degree Transfer Programme (ADP), and I went to the US to further my studies. Due to personal reasons, I decided to come home and finish it locally. This led me to switch from a US system to a UK system, hence I enrolled in the University of Derby programme. I made a promise to myself that this change should not affect the outcome of my grades and I was happy to keep that promise as I graduated top of my class.” said Raja Nur Syazwina.
Raja Nur Syazwina’s interest in the business field blossomed after high school. Like many students, she faced the daunting task of selecting a major. Ultimately, she chose Business Administration, a decision that allowed her to explore various facets of the business world, from Marketing and Economics to Accounting and Finance. She advises students to try a class before making a final decision, emphasising the importance of practical experience and interpersonal skills over theoretical concepts.
One of the highlights of Raja Nur Syazwina’s academic journey was her internship opportunity through HELP University’s University of Derby programme. She secured an internship at Amara Investment Management in Kuala Lumpur, which proved to be a transformative experience. This internship prepared her for the rigours of a 9-5 job, honed her stress management skills, and underscored the significance of teamwork. Ultimately, it led to a full-time job offer upon graduation.
“Throughout my career as an Investment Analyst, I have attended many conferences and networked with many professionals which has really helped build my social and interpersonal skills. In addition, I began training interns. That taught me patience, empathy, and teamwork.”
Despite initial reservations stemming from her non-traditional background in Accounting and Finance, Raja Nur Syazwina persevered with the support of mentors and a commitment to continuous learning. Her success in the field highlights the importance of dedication and adaptability.
Working in finance and asset management has been a privilege for Raja Nur Syazwina. Her role has granted her insights into how public-listed companies operate, both financially and operationally. She has also gained a deep understanding of the stock market. Her daily experiences are a testament to the constant learning opportunities present in the business world.
“Working in finance and asset management has been such a privilege. I can sufficiently understand and analyse how public-listed companies manage their organisation, not only from a financial perspective but also from an operational perspective. In addition, I am able to understand how the stock market operates and there is truly something new to learn every day.”
Raja Nur Syazwina’s long-term goal is to pursue a Master’s in Business Administration, with a focus on diversifying her skills. While she has excelled in finance and asset management, she aspires to explore consulting and technology in the future. Her journey reflects the importance of adaptability and a willingness to embrace change.
Raja Nur Syazwina advises students to opt for a broad-based degree, which exposes them to a wider range of options and academic interests. However, she acknowledges that those who are confident in their chosen field should follow their passion. In her words, “There is no rigid timeline in life. You are never too old or young to explore different interests, given you have the privilege to. It is your life, do not live it with regrets!”
