Diploma in Early Childhood Education

The term preschool is also known as nursery school, pre-primary or play school. Preschools  provide early childhood education (ECE) to children before they begin compulsory education at primary school.

This period is widely considered the most vulnerable and crucial stage of an individual’s life. It exposes children to the most formative and impressionable experiences which will have a lasting impact on their lives.

Because it is the first time that children are separated from the comfort and security of their parents and home while attending the preschool, it is like a second home where the children would feel comfortable and secure.

It is the beginning of the educational process outside their own home and away from their parents and siblings. Children build their identity and self-esteem. They learn the importance of their own name, objects and friends. They learn to communicate with teachers and fellow students. It lays the right foundation for the children’s lifelong progress. According to UNESCO, ECCE has the potential to nurture caring, capable and responsible future citizens.

The Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) programme at HELP University is more than preparation for primary school. It nurtures Educator-Carers who contribute to the holistic development of a child’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical needs in order to build a solid and broad foundation for lifelong learning and wellbeing.

The ECE programme features the element of Care where the Educator-Carer is equipped with the knowledge and understanding, skills and strategies, and attitudes and values in distinctively ECCE domains: by emphasising aspects of safety and security, and hygiene and health in the nurturing of the children.

The programme also trains the Educator-Carer to partner and work closely with parents to monitor and grade the children’s progress through reports and the maintenance of proper records.

HELP University offers the Diploma in Early Childhood Education (DECE) and the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE). Apart from being a stand-alone qualification enabling them to work in preschools, the DECE qualifies holders to enter directly into Year 2 of the BECE programme.

The HELP DECE gives a distinct personal and professional identity to graduates and equips them with the capability to play a role as a crucial link between children, families and the community.

The DECE programme is also equips Educator-Carers with a firm grounding in specific areas: an exceptionally strong basis in the social and psychological understanding of the child; promotes the  creativity and talents of Educator-Carers across multiple ECCE settings and scenarios, such as the arts, music, drama and constructions; balanced preparation for work in any preschool setting as a result of the 8-week workplace practicum and empirical based course and fieldwork; and an opportunity to learn and upgrade their English proficiency as the faculty members include English language specialists.

The distinctive strength of the DECE programme lies in its Teaching-Learning Modes:

  1. Besides lectures and tutorials, classes are conducted in the Teaching Centre where fieldwork and empirical studies that highlight the importance of experiential engagement are carried out with children. This is premised on the fact that the most effective learning takes place through direct experience.
  2. Techniques for the documentation of children’s learning progress along the developmental continuum. This enables a systematic charting of gains, gaps or shortfalls in knowledge and skills acquisiton to be noted for further action.

An advantage for HELP DECE students is that they are able to access the facilities and expertise of HELP International School (HIS) located next to the HELP University campus in Subang Bestari where the HELP ECCE programme is offered.

HIS is one of the best in the country with a truly talented, experienced and international team of teachers with an enlightened programme of nurturing Educator-Carers during their 8-week teaching practice and practicum that is a compulsory part of their professional preparation. The HIS offers the best kind of teacher training and education hub where best practices are taught and even offered up as benchmarks.

Encapsulating the pedagogical philosophy of the HELP DECE programme, Dr Gerard Louis, Dean of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences, Education and Languages of HELP University, remarked:

“Teachers are no more seen as receptacles of knowledge, transmitting content to their students. They are facilitators who moderate the manner in which learning happens. They create an environment where students use content to develop the human competencies and technological skills needed to succeed in whatever future careers they may venture into. They act as coach and mentor, confidante and counsellors, learning mediators and resource persons and on occasion, substitute parents, all in the course of a school-day”.

Premier Programmes in Business, Accounting and Management

CPA Autralia KPMG competition winners HELP University

The Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accounting (FBEA) of HELP University is one of the largest business schools in the region, with a reputation for nurturing highly employable graduates who have been offered jobs even before they graduate or head-hunted by multinational companies.

The FBEA’s wide range of specialisations comprise Economics, Accounting, Finance, Management, Entrepreneurship, International Business, Business Psychology, Hospitality Management, Tourism Management and Human Resource Management. Its degrees are widely accepted for credit transfer to top universities, or for accreditation by professional bodies.

Much of the success is due to the teaching and learning pedagogy employed by the FBEA.

Emphasis is placed on active learning through team-based projects and business simulation using real cases. Underlying the effective pedagogy is the experience of the faculty members with a long and deep familiarity with a wide spectrum of industries and enterprises. Many of them also act as advisers, examiners and curriculum consultants to professional bodies.

This is coupled with their deep commitment to offer counselling and guidance to students at odd hours and times. The strong bonds cultivated in this way smoothens and enhances the learning process.

The results significantly enhance the attractiveness of the programmes. Credits earned by the students are widely accepted for admission into Year 2 of degree programmes in topuniversities in the UK, Australia and NZ, including Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, Macquarie, Leeds and Liverpool.

Of special note is the FBEA’s exclusive 2+1 transfer to the University of Queensland (UQ), one of Australia’s top five universities. Students also consistently win scholarships of up to 100% offered by UQ.

In China, FBEA has a 2+2 arrangement with Dongbei University of Finance and Economics which is ranked among the top 5 for Economics and Finance, top 6 for Accounting and top 10 for Tourism Management.

Full recognition and accreditation are also accorded by professional bodies like ACCA, ICAEW, CFA, CPA Australia and MIA to fast-track FBEA graduates’ qualifying for full professional status.

In preparation for the Data Economy and e-Entrepreneurship, the FBEA curricula have a special focus on tech-based modules such as Fintech, Business Analytics and AI; these are aimed at producing entrepreneurial, global-minded and future-skilled graduates to meet the requirements of IR 4.0.

HELP also has one of the largest Bloomberg finance labs among private universities in Malaysia to provide students with a hands-on live stock-trading experience augmented by a simulation trading lab.

Further enriching the FBEA students’ learning experience in line with the rise of the data economy is the Certificate in Data and Business Analytics course available to all HELP students without charge. FBEA students can also obtain a Bloomberg Market Concepts certificate working at their own pace on the Bloomberg terminals. In partnership with the Alibaba Business School, FBEA offers students training in e-Commerce and e-Entrepreneurship skills and strategies which they can apply globally via the extensive business networks of Alibaba as a global conglomerate.

An important component of FBEA’s portfolio are the Hospitality Management and Tourism Management programmes.

These programmes aim to produce personnel to service the highly lucrative hospitality and tourism industries in Asia and globally. They have proven to be popular and have produced some top class professionals holding senior management posts in hotels like the Hilton and JW Marriott in Bangkok and Hanoi. Students have ample scope to develop their career mobility globally owing to HELP University’s wide network of business associates and partners who provide job, training and internship opportunities.

A clear testimony of the high standard of FBEA’s performance is the extension of the Premier Digital Tech University award (originally given to HELP University) specifically to FBEA’s programmes, in recognition of its efforts in embedding Data Analytics and Data Science elements in its courses.

This reputation was subsequently enhanced with the award of a maximum 5 Star Rating from QS (Quacquarelli Symonds), one of the most widely respected university ratings in the world in recognition of the exceptional quality of Business and Management Studies offered by HELP University.

Studying in the FBEA is an enriching and life-enhancing experience. From a long involvement in the field, it has developed the right pedagogy to nurture students to excel in academics, entrepreneurship and management.

Some names stand out in the long roll-call of FBEA achievers: Dr Kelvin Tan transferred with a HELP Diploma in Business to UQ and graduated with a BCom (Finance) with First Class Honours. After joining the faculty of the UQ Business School (recognised as a world-leading provider of business and management education and research), his research expertise in capital structure, corporate finance and econometrics earned him an invitation to undertake applied research for the Australian finance industry.

Of the many FBEA teams who have won competitions at the national and regional level, the HELP team of Terrell Thu, Jasmyn Lee and Owen Puah emerged among the top 3 in the CPA Australia-KPMG Case Competition. On the strength of their performance, they were offered jobs by KPMG.
