Kuala Lumpur, Friday 13 March 2020 – HELP University has set a new standard of excellence by becoming the first private university in Southeast Asia to be awarded top marks of 5 Stars in all 9 categories of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Star Rating System for international higher education institutions.

HELP also achieved the overall accolade of becoming a 5 Stars University Overall, rating its performance as world class across a broad range of areas with a high reputation, cutting edge facilities and internationally renowned academic development and teaching. This places the university on par with the world’s leading academic institutions and ahead of its counterparts both locally and regionally.

Professor Datuk Dr Paul Chan, Vice-Chancellor and President of HELP University says, “Our 5 Star Rating from QS is strong recognition that we excel in 9 key areas including Teaching, Employability and Internationalization. This explains why our students are not only highly employable, but they can also choose the jobs they want, become entrepreneurs, or further studies in top universities worldwide.”

The 9 areas of global excellence are Teaching, Online Learning, Internationalisation and Employability as well as Academic Development, Facilities, Social Responsibility, Inclusiveness, and Programme Strength for its Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme in the ELM Graduate School.

“The QS Stars Ratings provides a comprehensive assessment of our achievements across a wider range of areas than the QS Rankings,” says Professor Geoffrey Williams, Director, Research Management Centre, HELP University, who leads the HELP University QS Ratings process.

“Our 5 Star rating allows our stakeholders, particularly our students, to see where we excel through an objective, independent insight into how HELP University measures up against international standards,” he adds.

The QS Stars Ratings team provided a formal, independent audit of HELP University’s performance across 39 indicators in the eight categories benchmarked against objective standards of international excellence.

In the area of Teaching, HELP University achieved full marks for student satisfaction with teaching and further study, with almost one third of HELP graduates opting to continue full or part-time study after graduation.

“We are particularly proud that our faculty inspire our students to continue to study,” says Williams. “We aim to nurture a desire for life-long learning and enquiry which empowers our students to enrich their lives by finding out more about the things that interest and challenge them intellectually.”

In the area of Employability, HELP University’s 5 Star rating was supported by full marks for the career empowerment services of CAREERSense, the university’s own in-house one-stop career support and development centre.

“We aim to create graduates who are not just ready for the workplace but who are empowered to make choices after graduation for whatever they want to achieve whether they want to take a job, start their own business, continue their studies or just take time to reflect before continuing their journey in life,” said Williams.

The world-class diversity and international outlook of HELP University was recognised through full marks for international collaborations with 116 global partners, students and faculty hailing from 62 different countries and an active student exchange programme with regional and global universities allowing hundreds of inbound and outbound student exchange opportunities each year.

HELP University’s programmes for Social Responsibility were also benchmarked as world class with almost 100 hours of volunteer hours for each member of the HELP community, and more than RM48 million of social value created each year.

In the Inclusiveness category HELP University achieved full marks overall with 37% of HELP students coming from low-income backgrounds, high levels of help from scholarships and bursaries, and full support for minority groups and people with disabilities. In terms of gender balance HELP University plays its role with women making up the majority of our students and staff, including among senior managers headed by our Group CEO Datin Chan-Low Kam Yoke.

“HELP University has always aimed to be a Social Business Enterprise,” says Datuk Dr Chan. “Our values of inclusivity, acceptance, open and friendly discussion and debate drive our mission and we reach out from our community within HELP to our community outside of HELP on a daily basis to share what we have and encourage and support others wherever we can.”

These results show that HELP University is truly a world-class university and excel in areas such as teaching, graduate employability, and internationalization.”

Recently HELP University’s Faculty of Computing and Digital Technology (FCDT) and the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting (FBEA) were awarded the Premier Digital Tech University (PDTU) status by the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) in recognition of HELP University as one of Malaysia’s leading digital tech focused tertiary institutions.

Also, as part of our drive to become an Analytics-Driven Entrepreneurial University and to prepare students for the future, HELP University’s FCDT is focused on training students in Data Analytics, Internet of Things (IOT) and software development.

The recent Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) partnership with Alibaba Business School provides mentorship in Data Analytics and e-Commerce for HELP students to excel in the Data economy and workplace.

HELP is also a major hub for STEM-driven education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) to inculcate in students the key skills of creativity, critical analysis, independent thinking, and digital literacy.
